Just like your choice in fashion or friends, how you decorate your place is a direct reflection of your personality.
Everything from how you dress to what you order at your favorite coffee shop helps to define who you are, and that extends to decor, too. How we style our homes reflects to who we are and how we want others to perceive us, just ask any psychologist and they will tell you that.
Sometimes we’re making these choices consciously, like picking a crazy pattern that says, “hey, look at me!” Other times, we’re not as aware.
Decorating with lots of blackest and throw pillows, for instance, may mean you desire to make everyone feel welcome in your place. But if your home is lacking sitting room for company, it could indicate that you prefer to be alone than been with someone, that could be my quest. Or simply that you’re still on an entry-level salary – we’ve all been there.
If you love design from the Victorian Period, one might argue that you want people to perceive you as sophisticated and elegant. While one who gravitates towards the Art Deco look would more likely be viewed as artsy or a deep thinker. And simple, clean design – like completely bare kitchen counters – could signify a type-A personality, and one who opts for appearance over functionality.
As interior designer Charlie Bolivar there’s always those who opt for the middle ground of two distinct styles. “I think that when people decorate their spaces that are very neutral, where it’s not modern and it’s not traditional, “they’re good peacemakers because they like a little bit of everything.”
Trust Your Taste
Learning your own taste can be a lifelong journey. Wherever you’re on your own try to do this to clarify your current perfect style profile. Here’s what to do: turn off your brain, go on line and pick a few interior design photos that catches your eye. Don’t try to figure anything out, just go with your gut and record your answers.
Remember, just like people, most rooms have elements of many different styles so don’t feel boxed in by these suggestions; rather, use them as an invitation to investigate your own taste even further.
there are quite a few arguments about what decorating styles should be considered the foundational or basic home decorating styles. Though the list is ever changing, growing, and up for debating, I’m going to try to keep this simple.
These Are What Many Consider The 3 Basic Types Of Home Decorating Styles
TRADITIONAL

By far the most popular design style, traditional is a mix of beautiful, timeless and well-defined elements. Never cluttered nor standoffish or distinct, traditional brings together many worlds while still making you feel right at home. Calm colors, understated furniture with classic lines, and prominence on symmetry are all elements of the traditional decorating style.
CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary, however, refers to décor that is much more current. Even designs that were contemporary in the 2000s may no longer be considered contemporary but rather vintage. In five or ten years from now, contemporary design will likely have a different look and feel than contemporary design today. Where modern design has a specific look and feel, contemporary design is ever-changing, due in part to the availability of (new) materials and pieces. Contemporary rooms usually contain an element of surprise. Those who like their homes to make artistic statements often lean toward a contemporary styling.
ECLECTIC

Though the word “eclectic” is a recently coined design description, this style has been around for eons. Often mistaken as an anything-can-go way of decorating, the eclectic style is actually a very purposeful and well-thought-out way of decorating. The eclectic style is a perfect choice for those who love to mix styles but desire a cohesive look grounded in traditional. Don’t think of eclectic as being cluttered, but instead as a careful gathering of interesting elements.
